Unsung Story of Sachin Verma

Unsung Story of Sachin Verma

Several times, we would have come across some news items where people across the globe have unfortunately lost their limbs or other unfortunate incidents. The most common emotion is that we sympathize with them and try and wonder what it would be like for them, how big a change it is and how that might affect them in the smallest ways possible. That emotion lasts but for how long?

Through the story of Sachin, you will get a deeper understanding of what comes after.

Sachin is a young man who lost both his legs in a railway accident. When he recovered from the surgery he realized that his legs were missing from the knee below. He stayed in bed for about 8 months to fully recover.

What happens after losing out on 6 months of your life while sitting idle in the bed and imagining that the life now will be very different, how will everything get managed?

For Sachin, his loss of self-confidence was greater than the loss or the pain of losing both legs. He had completely given up, the will to even step out of his own home. The negativity had broken in and took
all his time away. During such times one needs motivation from their loved ones, someone who would view them the same way they did before, without sympathy and pity. His mom and relatives helped
him regain that confidence and motivated him. His mausaji surprised him with a scooty which helped him go out. He says the gift changed his life drastically. He was able to go out and when he did, he
realized that life does not come to an end because of an accident.

His mother often told him that there are kids who have suffered worse but are now doing well because they did not let the accident decide their future, they simply fought back. He knew that he had to fight
back too at least for his mother.

When he was able to go out, he comprehended that he worried needlessly about people’s views, and all that shame he felt about being an amputee was not worth it. His friends were happy to see him trying and did everything to support him. All this built his courage to get his life back on track. He decided to join a gym to improve his health and initially it was very difficult but he did not give up. He worked hard and when the improvements were visible and people were inspired by him, he felt motivated. He is now even working hard to win in the Paralympic Games.

His goals have now become a major part of his life. One thing that he wants to communicate to people who are still in the recovery phase and can not seem to go out because they feel bad for themselves is that stop thinking about other people as you have to live with yourself and not them.

How GetBak helped?

One of the happiest moments for Sachin was when he was able to walk across the hall of the GetBak office after receiving Prosthetic legs and training from the staff. When asked what made him choose GetBak he said without a pause that it was the staff at GetBak. He said that they were the kindest and they understood him and motivated him to work on his goals. He felt like he was a big step closer to having an independent life. Since then he has stayed in touch with them and they have tried to provide him all the assistance he needed and the best of product and services.

He says it is understandable to lose all hope when something so terrible happens and that it is very difficult to deal with it. What worked for him was having a plan ready for each day. The first thing he did after waking up was planning the day’s work. It helped him get rid of negative thoughts and achieve the set goals. And if this does not work, take a good nap to give your head a little rest.

He figured he enjoys his time in the gym about which he was very skeptical in the beginning. One of the most precious compliments he received was when his gym trainer/ friend said that because of him more people were motivated to work upon their body, and fewer people gave up since he joined. The feeling of being a help or source of inspiration for people made him happy. Social Media helped too, when he started sharing his story and about his routine life, health tips, etc, he came across more people like him who were motivated by his positivity. His story was able to reach a lot of people and seeing their positive reactions and encouraging comments, he felt even more connected. He enjoys making videos with his family and friends as it makes them laugh and right now all that matters for him is the happiness of his family, having a positive attitude, and goals to work upon.
